When Is Oculoplasty Required For Treating Drooping Eyelids?

Pathologic droopy eyelids, also known as ptosis is a condition that occurs from various causes which include nerve weakness, trauma. stroke etc. It can affect one eye or both of them at the same time. This condition may be present at birth sometimes. Depending on the severity of issue drooping eyelids can cause obstruction of the pupil (central seeing area), resulting in blurred vision.

Oculoplasty surgery is a reconstructive surgical process that deals with medical & surgical management of deformities of the eyelids, tear system and orbit. Ptosis is a condition that can be treated by oculoplasty.

When to go for surgery?

When the drooping of the eyelid is severe enough to cause cosmetic blemish or if it is blocking the vision in the eye, you will need to go for surgery.Sometimes the drooping of the eyelid may be due to small growths/ swelling in the eyelid – mechanical ptosis. In these cases removal of the growth or  reducing the swelling may relieve the drooping. In these cases you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive watering from the eye.
  • Severe pain resulting from swelling in the eye.
  • Protruded piece of mass from the eyelids which may / may not be obstructing normal vision.
  • Post-traumatic effect such as bluishness of the eyelid.
If you are going through any of the above-mentioned symptoms, consult a doctor immediately. An examination will be conducted to check the severity of the condition. If the doctor finds out that the swelling is growing and the lid droop is severe, he might recommend an Oculoplasty surgery.
