Blurred Vision?? It Can Be Cataract..

Cataract is the clouding of ones eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40 and are the most common cause of blindness in the world. In fact, there are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined.


What are the different types of cataract?


The different types of cataract include:
  • Sub capsular cataract: It occurs at the back of the lens. Diabetic people or those who are taking high dosage of steroid medications have a greater risk of developing a sub capsular cataract.
  • Nuclear cataract: It is formed deep in the nucleus of the lens. Nuclear cataracts are usually associated with aging.
  • Cortical cataract: It is characterized by the white, crescent-shaped opacities that begin from the periphery of the lens and work their way to the center in a spoke-like fashion. This type of cataract mainly occurs in the lens cortex, which is the part of the lens that surrounds the central nucleus.


What are the signs and symptoms of cataract?


A cataract starts out small and at first and has little effect on the vision. The vision is blurred a little, similar to looking through a cloudy piece of glass. A cataract may make light from the sun or a lamp too bright or glaring. It may also come to notice that the oncoming headlights during the night causes more glare than before. Colors may not appear as bright as they once did.


What causes cataract?


The lens inside the eye works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina for clear vision. It will also adjust the eye's focus, which lets us see things clearly both up close and far away.

The lens is mainly made of water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and let’s light passes through it. But as we age, some of the protein may combine together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. A cataract may grow larger and cloud more on the lens over time, making it harder to see.


How is cataract treated?


Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision. During surgery, the surgeon will remove the clouded lens and in most cases replace it with a clear, plastic IOL (Intraocular lenses). Just One Simple Procedure to Get A Clear Vision

A large number of people use specs to correct the refractive problems of their eyes. To avoid the uses of glasses, people undergo surgical methods to reshape the cornea or carve round dome in front of the eye. For most of the defects like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, people can be treated better with a laser correction of the cornea. For farsightedness, on the other hand, the trouble lies with a less steep curvature of the cornea. The same method of laser technology is used to achieve the required steepness.
Astigmatism is another defect that can be handled with refractive surgery techniques. To treat astigmatism, a laser is used to make an irregular and odd shaped cornea smooth and symmetrical.  This prevents the distortion of light making the light fall on the retina and that would create a better image.

Suffering From Diabetes? It May Cause Eye Problem

Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye complication that arises due to the presence of diabetes. This tends to damage the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissues behind the retina. At its beginning, it will cause no symptoms but in long term, it may cause blindness. People who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes are more prone to this condition. Controlling blood sugar will lessen its chances to a great extent.

How is it diagnosed?

An ophthalmologist will conduct a thorough the eye exam. This includes pupil dilation in that doctor will put drops in the eyes to widen the pupils. It will help look out for any difference in blood vessels, a growth of new blood vessels, retina swelling, the detachment of the retina.


Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment


Laser treatment: This treatment is used to treat infected blood vessels behind the retina. This reduces the changes happening in the eye. At the first, patient will be given drops to numb eyes. Then a laser will be directed into the retina to treat this. It will be over within 20 to 40 minutes.

Eye injections: In certain cases, a medicine called anti-VEGF is directly given to the eyes to prevent the growth of new blood vessels. Other two medicines were given are ranibizumab (Lucentis/Accentrix) & aflibercept (Eylea) which prevents the worsening and improve the vision.

Eye surgery: Known as vitreoretinal Surgery, it is recommended when there is a scar which is likely to cause retinal detachment. In this vitreous humor ( clear, jelly-like material which fills the space in the back of the eye lens ) is removed from the eye.

Vitreoretinal diseases

Vitreoretinal diseases are conditions that affect the vitreous and retina, present on the back portion of the eye. Vitreous is a clear jelly like material present between the crystalline lens and the retina which help in maintaining the stability of eye. The retina is a light-sensitive tissue present in the back portion of our eye which creates images using cornea and lens.

Common vitreoretinal diseases

  • Retinal detachments or tears: Retinal detachment occurs when the vitreous moves away from the retina and pulls the retina hard enough to tear it. It is a serious condition, which needs proper treatment. Otherwise this retinal detachment can lead to blindness or blurred vision.
  • Macular degeneration: Macular Degeneration is a condition, caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, which causes vision loss. Macula is the central portion of retina, which is responsible for controlling the ability to read,recognize the faces or colors and for focusing central vision.

 Macular Hole

  • Diabetic retinopathy: Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that affect eyes, due to the damage of blood vessels at the retina. This condition is an aftereffect of diabetes, where no symptoms are noticed at the onset of the disease. Patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are more prone to diabetic retinopathy.
  • Macular holes: The macula is an oval shaped area present in retina, which is responsible for providing sharp vision needed for reading, driving etc. Macular hole is developed when small break occurs in macula. It will cause distorted and blurred vision and is commonly seen in older people.
  • Posterior Vitreous Detachment: A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a condition which is seen in older people who are in their late 60's. Here the vitreous membrane gets separated from the retina causing posterior vitreous detachment.

Retinal Detachment

  • Flashes and floaters: Floaters are small specks or clouds moving in the field of vision. It can be appeared as dots, circles, lines, clouds or cobwebs. Flashes are seen when the vitreous gel pulls on the retina. It may be observed for weeks or months. These conditions are observed as a result of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD).

LASIK EYE SURGERY
